FRESNO, Calif. – The University of California, Merced men's and women's outdoor track team wrapped up their inaugural meet on Saturday at the Sunbird Invitational held at Sunnyside High School.
Jonathan Chavez, Jaydah Aguilar, and Brieanna Anderson highlighted the Bobcats performances finishing top six in the men's 1500m and women's 800m.
Chavez took sixth overall in the 1500m with a time of 3:59, which is a time that would have won the Cal Pac Championship in 2022 and placed top 15 at the national meet.
Aguilar took second overall in the 800m running a 2:28 time, just three seconds off the 2022 Cal Pac Championship winning time. Prior to the 800m, Aguilar ran 5:17 in the 1500m.
Anderson took fourth in the 800m with a time of 2:38.
Chavez (8:47) and Elizette Ysais (10:59) finished in the top half of the field in their respective 3000m races, while Sharvin Manjrekar was in the top half of for the 1500m (4:08).
Henry Arinze, Hannah DeLay, Kacey Rodriguez, and Justice Wilkins were the Bobcats sprinters in the inaugural meet.
Distance runners on the women's track team featured Aguilar, Anderson, Ysais, Carissa Estrada, Emily Gonzales and Samantha Tran. Gonzales also took part in the program's first ever long jump. The men's team saw Chavez, Manjrekar, Alberto Alves, Derrick Pickrel, Esteban Sanchez, Fabian Varelas, and Noah Vasquez compete.
Up next, UC Merced will compete at the Kim Duyst Invitational hosted by Stanislaus State in Turlock, Calif., on Saturday, March 4.
