MERCED, Calif. – University of California, Merced men's water polo attacker Andrew Jones and goalkeeper Matthew Lloyd swept the WWPA weekly awards after the Bobcats 14-10 win over Fresno Pacific.
Jones was named the WWPA Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, while Lloyd earned WWPA Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career. The Bobcats win on November 8 was their first ever in WWPA action. Also of note, UC Merced is just the second team this year to sweep the weekly awards, joining Concordia University Irvine.
Jones led the Bobcats and tied his career-high with six goals. Jones scored at least once in every quarter and a had a hat trick in each half to lift the Bobcats to the historical win. He scored two even strength goals, two power play goals, and converted a pair of penalty shots.
The junior from Temple City, Calif., holds team-high with 43 goals in 2025 and is second in program-history with 113 career goals.
Lloyd made 13 saves in the victory, including eight in the first half to help give the Bobcats an 8-4 halftime lead. He made another save in the third quarter and four more in the fourth quarter to solidify the victory.
The Bobcats junior goalie from Napa, Calif., has double-digit saves in all four conference games this year. Lloyd is the Bobcats all-time saves leader with 571 career saves.
Up next, UC Merced will start its final road trip of the regular season at Concordia University Irvine on Friday, November 14. Opening sprint from William Woolett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine, Calif., is scheduled for 7:00pm.
